Window-Dressing Department

In my life, I had only seen a shop window from a street and only when I wanted to buy something. Vydra has been persuading me that there is something in my painting works from which it is possible to conclude that I would be able to solve the given task.”

František Reichentál

In the 1931/1932 school year, Jozef Vydra chose Mikuláš Galanda as a leader of the Evening School of Business Advertising and Window-Dressing, but Galanda would prefer the position of expert in drawing and composition more, and he was active in the Window-Dressing Department only briefly. Vydra found a new candidate in František Reichentál, Vydra instructed him to undergo a rigorous window-dressing training in Prague and Berlin. In the spring of 1933, he was already at the head of Window-Dressing, two years later, Reichentál crowned his efforts in decoration education with an internship in Paris. The works of the Window-Dressing Department were visible in the thirties of the 20th century also in the shop windows of stores in Bratislava. The Window-Dressing workshop belonged to the best-equipped. A part of the practical instruction was to realise a shop window from its design to final form. In the 1934/1935 school year, František Tröster joined the Department’s team, as a scenographer, he intensively cooperated with the Slovak National Theatre. Tröster emphasised dynamic workings with lines and shapes, and most importantly with light in which he saw a functional artistic element that dramatised and made a shop window more efficient in its appeal. Apart from the Daily Department for Window-Dressing and Store Advertising, first launched in the school year of 1936/1937, there was also parallelly ongoing the Evening Window-Dressing course. In heading them, apart from Galanda, there were alternating Reichentál with Tröster.
